B S Knapp, or Brian S Knapp & Son Ltd, began trading in 1985.  Brian set up the company following the retirement of his partner, Harry Smith. Brian had worked for Harry from the age of 17 as a carpenter and was, by the late Seventies, made a director of Homes Construction Ltd. Homes Construction were a medium-sized developer based in Winterbourne, they were responsible for many small developments in the Winterbourne and Frampton areas in the Sixties.  Badly hit by slumps in the early Seventies, smaller works were undertaken, mainly extensions.  Better times produced larger jobs; large extension and renovation work for Frenchay Manor House, a large gym complex for St Ursulas School in Redland, two substantial houses on Church Road in Sneyd Park and a new build factory on Pennywell Road.  Further work was done for Bristol Grammar School, at the school and their sports fields and also for Stride Treglown Architects in Clifton.

Brian’s son, Paul, began working for Homes Construction at 17 (although he had often worked for them in his Easter and summer school holidays from age 13).  He was put through his apprenticeship as a carpenter at Brunel College, gaining distinctions in his coarsework and exams. 1985 saw Brian and Paul set up on their own, their first job being a new garage in Little Stoke.

From washers to new builds...

Our work up to the present day has seen us doing jobs from changing a tap washer, to putting a new beer cellar in a nightclub in Bristol City Centre, to large extension and renovation work to offices in Downend.  But we are always never very far from our beginnings in home and building maintenance and improvement.

Maxium profit is not everything...

We soon realised that small, personal work for individuals and small companies, where we didn’t spread ourselves too thin, was the best way to work - we didn’t get too stretched and the clients had a builder from beginning to end. This method has now been adopted as the norm and we will always endeavour to see a job through to the end with as little interruption to the work as possible. Maximum profit is not everything!
